Deck painting, Auckland

Deck Painting Auckland

Looking for deck painting or deck staining in Auckland? Painters Auckland restores and recoats timber decks across the North Shore, central Auckland, West and East Auckland and the Hibiscus Coast.

We clean, sand and recoat decks, steps, balustrades, handrails and pergolas, and we can change a deck from stain to paint, or back again, where the timber allows.

If your deck has gone grey, the old stain is patchy or the paint is peeling off the boards, you’ll get an honest view on whether it needs a recoat, a full strip back or a builder.

Stain or paint?

Stain soaks into the timber and wears away gradually, so it’s easy to maintain but needs recoating more often. Paint forms a film that lasts well on vertical surfaces but can peel on flat boards that bake in the sun and hold water. On most Auckland decks we suggest stain or oil for the boards and paint for balustrades and trims.

What Deck Painting Involves

Decks take more punishment than any other painted surface, so the preparation decides how long the finish lasts.

  • Deck cleaner to lift grey weathering, mould and grime
  • Sanding back loose coatings and raised grain
  • Proud nails and screws knocked in or refixed
  • Two coats of stain, oil or paint suited to the timber
  • Balustrades, handrails, steps and pergolas
  • House walls, glass and garden protected from runs and overspray

When a deck needs a builder first

Soft boards, spongy joists and wobbly balustrades are structural problems. Coating them only hides the issue for a season. If we find them, we’ll recommend repairs before any finishing work.

What Affects Your Deck Painting Quote

Deck quotes come down to size, condition and how much of the old coating has to come off.

Deck size

The area of boards, plus steps and landings, sets the base amount of work.

Existing coating

A sound stain just needs a clean and a recoat. Peeling paint may need a full strip back to bare timber.

Stain to paint, or back

Changing the type of finish takes more preparation than recoating like for like.

Balustrades and pergolas

Vertical timber, rails and overhead beams are slow, detailed brushwork.

Sun and water exposure

Decks in full sun or holding water need tougher products and more frequent care.

Access

High decks and decks over gardens or glass take extra care to protect what’s below.

How we quote. We look at the boards, the old coating and the structure, then quote the preparation and product that suit your deck.

How a Deck Recoat Runs

  1. Inspection

We check the boards, coating and structure and talk through stain versus paint.

  2. Written quote

Prep, product and coats listed, with any repairs to sort first.

  3. Clean and dry

The deck is cleaned and left to dry out properly before coating.

  4. Sand and prep

Loose coatings and raised grain sanded, fixings checked.

  5. Coat and cure

Two coats applied, then we tell you when it’s safe to walk on and furnish.

Why Choose Us for Your Deck

Straight advice on stain or paint

We recommend what will last on your deck, not what’s quickest to apply.

Proper drying time

Timber is left to dry after cleaning, because coating damp boards is the fastest way to a failed finish.

Surroundings protected

Walls, glass, planters and gardens are covered before any coating goes on.

Clear about structure

If boards or joists need a builder, we say so before finishing work starts.

Where We Do This Work

We paint and stain decks across Auckland, from bush sections in the west to coastal homes on the Hibiscus Coast.

Deck Painting Questions

How often should a deck be restained?

It depends on the product and the exposure. Decks in full sun or heavy foot traffic need recoating more often than sheltered ones. When the timber starts to look dry, grey or patchy, or water stops beading on the surface, it’s time.

Can you paint over a stained deck?

Often, yes, once the stain has weathered and the surface is cleaned and prepared. Going from paint back to stain is harder, because the paint has to be fully removed first.

How long before we can use the deck again?

It depends on the product and the weather. Light foot traffic is usually possible sooner than putting furniture back. We’ll tell you the times for the product used on your deck.

Can grey, weathered timber be restored?

Usually. A deck cleaner and light sanding bring back much of the timber colour, and a new coat of stain or oil protects it again, provided the boards themselves are sound.

Do you paint balustrades and pergolas?

Yes. Balustrades, handrails, steps and pergolas can be included, and they’re often painted while the boards are stained or oiled.

Can you replace rotten deck boards?

Replacing boards and fixing structure is builder’s work. If we find soft boards or joists, we’ll point them out, and Builders Auckland in the Cornerstone Living network can do the repairs before we finish the deck.
