Exterior Painters Auckland

Looking for exterior painters in Auckland who take the preparation seriously? Painters Auckland paints house exteriors across the North Shore, central Auckland, West and East Auckland and the Hibiscus Coast.

We paint weatherboards, plaster and fibre cement cladding, painted brick, fascia, soffits, window frames, doors and trims, and we do the washing, scraping, filling and priming that decides how long the job lasts.

From a coastal home losing its paint to salt and sun to a 1990s plaster house due its first proper repaint, you get a written quote that spells out the preparation and the paint system for your cladding.

Why Auckland exteriors fail early

Auckland’s UV is strong, and coastal suburbs add salt spray. Shaded walls stay damp and grow mould and lichen. Paint laid over chalky, salty or mouldy surfaces lets go early, which is why washing and treatment come first on every exterior we paint.

Exterior Painting by Cladding Type

Each cladding has its own weak spots, so the preparation changes with it.

  • Weatherboards: loose paint scraped, edges sanded, bare timber primed, nail holes and splits filled
  • Plaster and stucco: hairline cracks filled with flexible filler before a flexible, breathable coating
  • Fibre cement and sheet cladding: joins checked and sealed before recoating
  • Painted brick: cleaned and treated for efflorescence, then coated with a masonry paint
  • Trims, fascia, soffits and spouting: the detailed brushwork that makes a house look finished

Older weatherboards and lead paint

Paint on homes built before the 1980s may contain lead, so older layers should be tested before any sanding. Where lead is present it has to be removed with lead-safe methods, which protects your family, your neighbours and your garden.

What Affects Your Exterior Painting Quote

Outside, the condition of the existing paint and the height of the house matter far more than floor area.

Height and scaffolding

Single-level homes can often be painted from ladders and planks. Two-storey and sloping sites usually need scaffolding for safe access.

Existing paint

Paint that’s chalking or flaking has to be taken back and primed. Sound paint needs only a wash and a scuff.

Cladding

Weatherboards take longer than flat cladding. Plaster needs crack repair. Brick and fibre cement each need their own products.

Exposure

Homes facing the sea, the prevailing weather or heavy shade need more treatment and a tougher paint system.

Planting and access

Gardens close to the house, narrow side paths and neighbours’ boundaries take time to protect and work around.

Trims and joinery

Windows, doors and spouting in a contrasting colour add a lot of brushwork compared with a single-colour scheme.

How we quote. Your written quote lists the preparation for each part of the house, the products and the number of coats, and notes any repairs we found that need a builder first.

How an Exterior Repaint Runs

  1. Inspection

We walk the house with you and check cladding, trims, joinery and any rot or damage.

  2. Quote and paint system

A written quote covering prep, products and coats for your cladding.

  3. Wash and treat

The house is washed and treated for mould and lichen, then left to dry.

  4. Repair, prep, prime

Scraping, sanding, filling and priming bare or repaired areas.

  5. Topcoats and walkthrough

Two topcoats in suitable weather, then a walk around the house together.

Why Choose Our Exterior Painters

We wait for the weather

We don’t paint onto damp surfaces or ahead of rain to keep a schedule. A weather delay protects the finish.

Gardens and paving protected

Plants, paths and decks are covered before scraping and washing, and cleaned up afterwards.

Honest condition reports

Rotten boards and failing flashings get pointed out before painting, not painted over.

Paint suited to the site

Products chosen for the cladding and the exposure, from sheltered sections to houses facing the sea.

Where We Do This Work

We paint house exteriors across Auckland, including coastal suburbs on the North Shore and Hibiscus Coast.

Exterior Painting Questions

Can you paint a house exterior in winter?

Sometimes. Paint needs a dry surface and mild temperatures to cure properly, so winter work depends on getting a run of fine days. We don’t paint onto wet or cold surfaces to hold a schedule. Late spring to early autumn is the most reliable time, and interior work can happen any time.

How often should an Auckland house exterior be repainted?

It depends on the cladding, the colour and the exposure. North and west faces and coastal homes weather fastest, and dark colours fade sooner. Signs it’s due: paint that rubs off chalky on your hand, cracking or flaking, and bare timber showing through.

Do you water blast before painting?

We wash every exterior before painting, but the method depends on the cladding. Plaster and older timber need a gentler wash, because high pressure can drive water into the wall and damage soft surfaces.

Can you paint plaster and stucco homes?

Yes. Plaster homes need hairline cracks filled with a flexible filler and a paint system that can move and breathe with the cladding. We’ll also point out any cracks or areas that look like they need a plaster or cladding specialist before painting.

Will you need scaffolding?

Most two-storey houses and sloping sites need it for safe access to the upper walls and eaves. If it’s needed, it’s included in your quote so you’re not surprised by a separate bill.

What happens if you find rotten weatherboards?

We show you before painting. Small areas can sometimes be filled and primed, but rotten boards need replacing by a builder. Builders Auckland, part of the same Cornerstone Living network, can handle that work before we paint.
